THE MANNING’S School thrashed former champions Godfrey Stewart 9-0 in their Savanna-la-Mar derby in Zone C of the ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup match at Manning’s yesterday.

Godfrey Stewart’s Devonte Bernard scored an own goal in the third minute before Omar Sommerville doubled the tally for the winners in the 28th. Sommerville would grab two on the day, scoring in the 62nd.

Dainton Williams added to the tally in the 36th and would go on to complete a brace in the 82nd.

Before that though, Joden Grey’s 51st-minute effort hit the back of the net, while substitute Brandon Parchment hit home with his first touch in the 76th minute.

In the 85th minute, Rohan Virgo joined the scoring party and in the 89th, 15-year-old Rajon McKenzie hit one from the penalty spot to complete the rout.

The result left Manning’s coach Everton Tomlinson a satisfied man.

“With a win like this, I hope this can boost our confidence and allow us to make progress as we move along. Even though we think it should be more but if you score nine, you can’t complain.

Some easy chances were missed and not much challenge from Godfrey Stewart,” said Tomlinson.

“We want to send a statement that this is a standard we want to maintain to win every game at home convincingly. Having the opportunity to play Godfrey Stewart, that statement was sent,” he added.

Michael Graham, coach of Godfrey Stewart, said the age of his team and the time in which it was put together impacted its performance.

The team returning average age is 15 years old and was put together two months ago.

“We never anticipated this scoreline, but that is football, you win some, you lose some. We know Manning’s is a superior team, but that doesn’t mean we will sit and allow them to run over us. We just need to build a solid foundation, so we can compete in the future. There is a lot of room for improvement,” Graham explained.

“There are some positives we can take from this game. The players were timid at first, but they got more comfortable in the second half. It will take time,” he added.
