Glenmuir to move on without Daley

FOR THE first time in nearly a decade, Glenmuir High School’s netball teams will go into the Rural ISSA schoolgirl competition without mentor and key member of their coaching staff, Annette Daley.

Daley, a former national senior coach, who has also been at the helm of a dominant Mico University College netball programme for years, is now principal at neighbouring school, Denbigh.

Two years ago, Glenmuir had their best results in the ISSA schoolgirl netball competition, winning the senior title after defeating many-time champions, Holmwood Technical. They were also finalist in the junior finals where they lost narrowly to Holmwood.

Ryan Reid, coach at Glenmuir for almost 25 years, said while Daley will be missed, he is confident they will continue to be a force to be reckoned with.

“We will surely miss the mentorship of Annette at the Glenmuir netball programme as she has a wealth of experience which has helped to put the school on the map in netball,” said Reid, who stated that he has worked along with Daley for the past nine years.

“Losing Annette to Denbigh is a huge blow for us, but I am not too worried as she is the principal of Denbigh and not the netball coach, despite that school having the experienced Winston Nevers as their coach,” said Reid.

According to Reid, the experience he mined working alongside Daley will be integral.

Despite losing out to Holmwood Technical in the semifinal last year, Reid thinks this season will be challenging.

“It will be a challenging season for us, as we have lost three core players from the senior team but we have most of our players who won an under-15 competition a few years ago and they definitely have gelled now,” said Reid.

Glenmuir are drawn in Zone ‘F’ of the competition and have Kemps Hill, Thompson Town, Kellits, and Old Harbour for company. They will open their campaign on Tuesday, October 1 away to Kellits.

The team will go head to head with Denbigh away on October 31 and Reid is looking forward to that game.

“Preparation wise, I think Denbigh is in a better position than us as they competed in two series recently, against local high school teams and a Trinidad under-18 team but by the time we play them, our girls would have gotten some added playing time and will be ready to take them on.”
