Blazing wheels

Motor vehicle fires can be tragic if not handled properly. And, the causes may range from a collision to electrical short circuit.

"Most car fires are caused by short circuits in the electrical system," said Keith Austin, auto electrician of St Andrew.

"In case of fire, do not waste time. Get the passengers out and away from the motor vehicle immediately," he said.

The auto electrician explained if the driver does not have a fire extinguisher, he or she should try to smother the flame with a heavy cloth, dirt or sand.

"Water is a big no, no," warned Austin. "Water must not be used to put out an electrical fire".

According to nurse Rachel Rowe, one should not grip burning wires with bare hands, as an electrical burn can be very serious.

Austin advised if the fire is beyond control, get away from the vehicle as quickly as possible before the gas tank explodes, and try getting help.

A vehicle could be totally engulfed in a short time. In order to mitigate the danger of a fire, the driver should:

  • 1. Stop as quickly as possible.
  • 2. Get the passengers out and away from the vehicle quickly and orderly. Advise them to remain calm.
  • 3. Dial 113 for the fire service and 119 for the police.
  • 4. If a fire extinguisher is present, tackle the source of the blaze.
  • 5. If carrying hazardous materials, keep the public and other vehicles away from the fire.
