Give interviewees feedback for growth

Published:Tuesday | January 25, 2011 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I am writing this letter out of concern for our many unemployed Jamaicans, especially youths.

Many have gone to interviews only to find they were unsuccessful in obtaining a place in the job market. The interviews are oftentimes very gruelling and nerve-wracking.

My concern is, after going to such interviews and not obtaining a job, why is feedback not provided to the interviewee? How is it that the interviewee will know where he/she went wrong and what improvements, if any, need to be made?

I think this information is vital in order for the candidate not to make the same mistakes on the next set of interviews. After all, aren't interviews supposed to make you better? Feedback, whether oral or written, should be given to every person that has been interviewed for a job.

I am a temporarily unemployed teacher who has been on numerous interviews which I thought had gone well but ended in disappointment. Moreover, these institutions do not have the decency to call you and tell you that you have not received the job. I would have loved if I had received some sort of feedback about why I did not receive the job, considering that I am very qualified.

I am, etc.,
