Shortly after he graduated from Dinthill Technical High School in St Catherine, Vivian Mitchell fell in love with motorsport. It is a relationship which has blossomed over the last 20 years, and Mitchell has no regrets.

As he matured behind the wheel, Mitchell has transformed from drag racer to one of the rising stars at Dover Raceway, St Ann.

He was so impressive at the last race meet in late May, that he was drafted into a group of six to represent Jamaica at the upcoming Caribbean Motor Racing Championship (CMRC) in Barbados.

'happy and grateful'

"I am really happy and grateful for the exposure," said Mitchell, is a motor-vehicle examiner by profession.

He visited Dover for the first time when he left high school, in the early 1990s and immediately fell in love with the sport.

"I remember watching Peter Moodie Sr and David Summerbell Sr racing. A few years later, I got involved in drag racing at JamWest and Vernamfield, then circuit racing at Dover," Mitchell told Automotives.

Mitchell has imported a 1997 EK9 Honda Civic from Japan, using it to defy the odds at Dover. In May he competed in the IP 29, Thundersport I and MP 2 classes, winning seven of eight races, and was named one of the drivers of the meet.

He is expected to spring surprises at CMRC in Barbados.
