Portmore MP fetes senior citizens
The auditorium of the HEART College of Construction Services (formerly the Portmore HEART Academy) was abuzz with excitement on Thursday, December 14, during the ninth annual Senior Citizens' Treat.
It was an evening full of fun, food and fellowship among the seniors, numbering about 150, from different sections of the South east St Catherine constituency. The seniors were fed with servings of fried and baked chicken, stewed beef, escoveitched fish, rice and peas, with toss and potato salad. Those with a sweet tooth duly enjoyed the servings of sorrel and fruit cake on offer.
"I am pleased with this dinner. I have been coming every year since 2007, and it was only last year that it was never held. I am enjoying the treatment, and I am looking forward to next year," said 74-year-old Rosalin Bird.
Others echoed similar sentiments that for several years they have benefited from the treat and were very pleased that the kind gesture continues.
"This is simply a great feeling to be among your peers, some that you have not seen for sometime. It's an early Christmas present," said Monica Edwards.
SHOWING APPRECIATION
The guests were treated very well by the host, Member of Parliament Colin Fagan, and his team of volunteers, who served up a well-appreciated entertainment package.
"It is my way of showing my appreciation to some of those who are the forerunners in the constituency," Fagan said. "The respective councillors are asked to select the seniors. We treat them here and then visit the shut-ins with gift packages," he added.
He said the venture costs more than $500,000, but it was not much of a hassle as the event has been heavily sponsored.
Four councillors, along with the MP, sang several popular songs much to the delight of the captive audience. The winner of the dancing contest was an overjoyed 65-year-old, Gloria Simmonds who was given a potted plant for her dancing skills.
It was a celebration that etched smiles on the faces of the seniors. The festivities ended with each guest given a bag of goodies accompanied by best wishes from the host.
