No agreement on legal fees for cops
A meeting at the Ministry of Justice has failed to settle the dispute over the non-payment of millions of dollars in fees to lawyers representing police personnel facing murder charges arising from the so-called death squad cases.
The cases, which involve about nine policemen, have stalled in the courts as the lawyers insist that they be paid.
Justice Minister Delroy Chuck said the parties did not arrive at a settlement during the meeting on Monday.
The Ministry of National Security through its Legal Defence Fund, provides assistance to cops facing criminal charges arising from incidents that occur in the line of duty.
National Security Minister Robert Montague has said the government is contemplating retaining a panel of lawyers to help cops in their legal defence.
