Table Tennis Ja proposes Caribbean TT League

Jamaica has suggested two measures designed to raise the profile of regional table tennis. According to Table Tennis Jamaica president Godfrey Lothian, proposals for a regional club league and a table tennis college were made at recent meetings of the sport's administrators in the Caribbean.

Lothia said he had tabled suggestions designed to lift the standard of play in the region. "We have also made two proposals to the Caribbean Table Tennis Federation, one to develop a table tennis college of the Caribbean, and, two, for us to set up a Caribbean club league", he revealed, "where the champion club will play in that league because we think the Caribbean is weak and we want to get up to first world status in terms of table tennis."

The highest ranked male and female players from the Caribbean are Cuban Andy Pereira and Puerto Rican 17 year-old prodigy Adriana Diaz. They appeared at number 140 and 37 on the current International Table Tennis Federation world rankings this month. The top ranked Jamaican man is Simon Tomlinson, who is world number 747.

No Jamaican women is world ranked.

Lothian recently attended the first Table Tennis for All, for Life Forum, hosted by the Latin American Table Tennis Union in Costa Rica. At the event, he requested some assistance from the International Table Tennis Federation for the upcoming Caribbean Region Senior Championship which will contested in Jamaica next month, September 23-29.
