Mystery of the fourth monkey

In the annals of ancient morality teachings, we encounter a profound image that has endured through time: the depiction of three wise monkeys imparting invaluable life lessons. With its hands covering its eyes, the first monkey teaches us the principle of “see no evil”, underscoring the notion that many misdeeds originate from what we see in the world. Similarly, the second monkey, covering its ears, symbolises “hear no evil”, reminding us of the perils of being swayed by false or negative information. Lastly, with its hands over its mouth, the third monkey signifies “speak no evil”, highlighting the connection between what we see, hear, and ultimately, express through our actions.

FOURTH MONKEY: THINK NO EVIL

Amid the trio of wisdom, a question arises: What is the elusive fourth monkey? While some interpretations suggest that it embodies “do no evil”, a deeper introspection unveils a more profound truth – the essence of all the three monkeys, “think no evil”. Contrary to popular belief, our eyes and ears serve merely as conduits for information. It is our mind that processes and determines our responses. Consider a scenario where we come across an expensive item such as the latest mobile phone. While our eyes recognise the object, it is our mind that decides whether to covet or respect it. The true arbiter of our actions lies not in our senses but in the mind and discernment in our quality of thoughts.

HOW TO DISCIPLINE THE MIND

The crux of embracing the fourth monkey lies in disciplining our minds. By cultivating a daily regimen of consuming positive and righteous information, we rewire our thought patterns and cultivate a more conscientious outlook. Unlike traditional methods such as fasting or prayers, chanting or worshipping, which may offer temporary respite, the practice of mindful information consumption presents a transformative journey towards sustained ethical conduct.

Integrating this wisdom into our lives begins with a conscious effort to filter the information we expose ourselves to. Whether through traditional or social media, limiting our exposure to negativity fosters a healthier mental environment. Just as regular sweeping keeps a floor clean, daily intake of healthy, positive information purifies our minds.
