Surprisingly Sweet vegan treats
Jhanelle Golding is making something ‘surprisingly sweet’. Going vegan years ago, the culinary artist found it difficult to find vegan dessert options. With a constant sweet tooth that needed to be satisfied, she decided to try making a few luscious treats that were enjoyed not just by her, but family and friends. This led to the birth of Surprisingly Sweet in 2016.
The options are simply delicious and are made without eggs, dairy products, and, in some cases, gluten. Plus, delivers the sweet course to her clients.
“I’ve always loved baking. In 2015, I spent the summer in the US working at a French bakery. While I didn’t make any desserts, I admired seeing the level of detail that the French artists put into making their desserts. It was inspiring, which made me want to start my own dessert business,”she told Food.
SURPRISINGLY SWEET ADVENTURE
Surprisingly Sweet is known for its bestsellers: carrot cake, cinnamon rolls, and gluten-free brownies. But all this goodness is only available on a seasonal basis, from February to May. The pastry chef explained that her baked goodies are very popular during the holidays.
Chef Golding loves being in the kitchen, but more so, whipping up one-of-a-kind vegan desserts that cannot be found anywhere else. She believes she has filled a well-needed demand in Jamaica.
“I enjoy being able to make my own unique creations. It’s fun to try out different ingredients and put together a dish that I’m really proud of,” she said.
Her admiration for the cooking station has also inspired her to start an Instagram page and blog, From The Comfort Of My Bowl, where she shares a wide variety of vegan dishes she has made over the years, some of which are inspired by her travels and life abroad.
“I’ve been told by many customers that Surprisingly Sweet’s desserts are just as delicious, if not more than regular,” Chef Golding said.
