Breakfast is great at any hour, but starting your morning, each day, with a hot beverage and a platter of delicious food is like falling in love over and over again. It is called the most important meal of the day because its main purpose is to awaken the senses and re-energise the body from the first bite. First Bite also happens to be the name of a new, popular spot to grab breakfast at any time of the day.

Located in Sunshine Mall, Portmore, the eatery fuses popular American breakfast foods and Jamaican foods and flavours, said Assistant Store Manager Anjolie Hull about the menu.

“It appeals to persons who want to experience and taste a difference. Our slogan is ‘Eat right, eat light, eat nice’. [We] promote healthy living and having balanced meals which do not have to lack creativity, have a contrast of seasonings and arouses the palates, making our customers fall in love with breakfast again,” she told Food.

Some of the mouthwatering menu creations include the jerked chicken and the ackee and salt fish omelettes; a wide variety of pancakes and waffles, from the rum and craisin to the plantain and pineapple upside-down pancakes and the coconut-stuffed waffle. Their ‘peppahwaffle’ is a spicy mix of Scotch bonnet baked in a Belgian waffle, made from scratch. Each First Bite creation has its own personality, with names like ‘Bossman’ bagel burger and the ‘Boasy’ waffle.

The combination of the foods is not just very hearty; it provides a complete offering of nutrients and minerals without the heaviness that usually turns persons away from the first meal of the day. First Bite also supports local farmers, Hull said, “and we are particular about using free-range eggs for our Eggtastic menu; and our owner continues to explore food-making techniques and baking signature brioche buns and breads”. Other meals are available, such as pasta, ackee and salt fish spring rolls and spaghetti Carbonaro; but breakfast is a big attraction and First Bite is open until 3 p.m. daily.

“With the pandemic, we saw persons taking the time to get familiar with turmeric and ginger, so we reinvented some of our recipes and also created the turmeric latte, which is a big seller,” the assistant store manager shared.

From hot to cold, there are over 15 beverages in the selection. If you’re not a fan of hot beverages, many can be transformed to cold; and there are also natural juices, like the cucumber lemonade and flavoured iced teas.

They also offer outstanding customer service and cater to the needs of all who enter.

“We’re big on customer service; we are not a business without customers, and we aim to share our love of breakfast with those new and those returning, knowing that there will always be something to take a ‘first bite’ of and fall in love with breakfast,” Hull said.
