Letter of the day: Four schools, no pedestrian crossing

THE EDITOR, Sir:
Have you ever seen a lesson on road safety being delivered by Cameal Stewart of the Road Safety Unit of Jamaica? I must say it is very thorough as I was told by my son, who is a student of the Jonathan Grant High School in Spanish Town.
These students are blessed to have such a highly trained person to come in to educate them about the importance of using the road safely as a pedestrian and as a motorist.
One important lesson that I hope that my child and the other children will be able to practise is how to use a pedestrian crossing, which was taught to them during the road-safety session.
It is quite unbelievable that along White Church Street, from the intersection with Burke Road to the train line at Dela Vega City, there are four schools on that stretch and there is not one pedestrian crossing, not one crossing guard, and not one school-zone sign. It is an indictment on the authorities who are placed in the position to ensure that our children are safe on the roads.
It is commendable that our children are being taught to use the road safely, but it is sad when they are unable to practise what they are taught.
Are we waiting for several major accidents to occur before we believe that these signs are needed? Please, I beg you to let our children have a chance to grow up in a safe environment. The students of Spanish Town Primary, Jonathan Grant High School, Spanish Town Basic School, and Walters Basic School would all be grateful for the opportunity to be brought up in a safe environment. Let's give them a chance to practise what they were taught about road safety.
