Bring back the railway system

Published:Wednesday | August 15, 2018 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

It is said that the Jamaica Railway system was inaugurated in the year 1845. This was the first railroad outside of Europe and North America.

Today, Jamaica is without a passenger rail system. This is a backward move in the quest for economic development.

Gone are the days when I would commute to Kingston from rural Jamaica via rail. I would sit in convenience without hassle, study and enjoy the scenic view of the hinterlands.

Please, Parliamentarians, capture the vision of Minister Mike Henry's multimodal transportation plan, and bring back the rail. Passengers and cargo would be moved conveniently and efficiently ' speeding up' the 2030 Vision.

Bring back the railway. There is no need for fear. All the elements of transportation can coexist.
