Schools must lead charge against domestic violence

THE EDITOR, Sir:

For the umpteenth time, in the case of the eight-year-old chopped to death in Windsor Heights, St Catherine, we are seeing a case of domestic violence in our communities in Jamaica.

I can't stress enough the need for a generational or long-term approach to this and other problems in our society. The common denominator in most children's lives in Jamaica is school. We need URGENTLY to implement a time/slot in schools where they learn how to behave appropriately, how to relate to the opposite sex, and understand financial independence (especially our girls).

Therefore, if they are in an adverse situation, as adults, they can leave knowing that they and their children will be safe. The earlier we start, the better. In my book, this is more important than qualifications. You can have a million degrees but still not be a good person. So, by instilling good values, Jamaica can really reach its great potential.

I believe the future of our country depends on it.
