Problem solving at KPH

THE EDITOR, Sir:

“This is acrobatics!” exclaimed the general surgeon as she discussed and deliberated with the anaesthetists while trying to solve an internal problem pre-operatively.

Non-functioning machines, improper adaptors, British models, Chinese models, prioritising emergency cases, all while working with limited resources, is very difficult.

Internally, amazing non-medical problem solving is accomplished daily at the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH). It is this effective problem solving that adds to the standard of care for all patients. The University Hospital of the West Indies charges $2,000 per patient. Kingston Public charges zero. ‘Free’ is great, but, to be on the road for Vision 2030 and to be closer to international standards of care, the green light should be given to help solve this problem. ‘Incentive sweetens labour’.

Despite it all, there are notable improvements with some of the KPH surgical theatres, and commendation must be given for those positive changes. The exceptional ability of the medical professionals to communicate and problem solve daily is a tremendous undertaking. It is imperative for Jamaica to retain its most valuable resource – its people. Making conditions so frustrating that our specialists leave our shores is a major setback.
