Be wary of China

THE EDITOR, Madam:

The Jamaica Labour Party was known to be the party firmly with the West and its policies on China. That stance changed during and after the Bruce Golding administration. Prime Minister Andrew Holness and others all welcome the influx of Chinese investments and favourable treatment given to them when compared to others.

Many of these Chinese investments have a lot of concessions that will impact us for decades to come.

The Donald Trump administration warned the Andrew Holness administration about dealings with China. Former US Ambassador to Jamaica Donald Tapia was very vocal in his warning.

The other day, I saw reports of the administration tempering the amount of investments from China. I’m wondering what caused the new change of heart coming from this administration. Is it because of the Russia-Ukraine conflict or the crisis going on in Sri Lanka?

Prime Minister Andrew Holness had a meeting with US Vice-President Kamala Harris the other day. Did talks about China come up in that meeting?

I am for the people of China, but I’m not for the Chinese Communist Party’s regime.
