Highway 2000 renamed in honour of PJ Patterson

The Kingston to May Pen leg of Highway 2000 was today renamed in honour of former Prime Minister PJ Patterson.

Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller, who delivered the keynote address, lauded Patterson for his contribution to national development.

Patterson was recognised for his vision in pursuing the highway 2000 project through public private partnership and for improving the social and economic welfare of Jamaicans.

Mr Patterson said he was proud to be acknowledged in this way.

The elder Statesman, who celebrated his 80th birthday on April 10 noted that the construction of road works such highway 2000 is important for economic development.

While commenting on the quality of the work on the highway done by TransJamaican Highway and the National Road Operating and Constructing Company, Patterson urged Jamaicans to protect against any criminality the infrastructure works that are in progress.

Highway 2000 was one of the millennium projects announced by the Patterson administration in the late 1990s.

He served as Jamaica's sixth Prime Minister from 1992 to 2006.
