JPs to get more training

Justices of the Peace (JPs) are to undergo additional training to enable them to better perform their duties.

That is according to Justice Minister Delroy Chuck, who says the annual training programmes for JPs will cover areas such as rehabilitating youth offenders, inspection of prisons and police lock-ups, as well as administering the proposed expanded use of mediation in parish courts.

Chuck was speaking in St Thomas last Thursday during a ceremony marking the installation of 14 new JPs.

He says the enhanced training for JPs is intended to empower and strengthen them to help rescue and restore communities plagued by crime and violence.

Chuck says the plan is to have at least four training sessions in each parish and each JP will be required to attend at least one session.
