Asafa Powell gives helping hand to church

Former 100-metre sprint world-record holder Asafa Powell has donated $400,000 to the Redemption National Church of God in Waterloo Ewarton St Catherine.

The athlete made the donation on Monday to the place of worship that is supervised by his mother, the Reverend Cislyn Powell.

He told The Gleaner that he was very pleased to be able to assist the church.

"For years my mother and other members have complained that there is a need for assistance in getting paint, benches and other items for the church. I am very pleased to be able to give what little financial assistance that I can offer," Asafa Powell said.

He told The Gleaner that he intends to support the upkeep of the church as it is an important feature of the community (Waterloo), where he spent many of his youthful days.

Meanwhile, Pastor Powell told The Gleaner that the congregation was very happy with the donation by the athlete.

"This donation is very timely and we are thankful that things are looking better for us as a church.

The improvement that will be done will make the place more attractive and members will be more comfortable," she said.

She added that her son has been contributing by way of treats for members and their children, however, the latest donation is like "divine intervention" which will "touch" the building directly.
