As of today, the National Works Agency (NWA) says westbound traffic along the Mandela Highway, between Tom Cringle Drive and the Six Miles Overpass bridge, will be shifted to facilitate ongoing road reconstruction works along the southern section of the corridor.

According to acting manager, Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Ramona Lawson, traffic headed to Portmore and Spanish Town will remain in two lanes, but will be shifted to the right as it exits Spanish Town Road onto the Mandela Highway.

She explains that the existing median strip will be removed; the area excavated, filled with subgrade material and paved to accommodate a section of the new driving lane. These works are not expected to affect the movement of traffic through the area.

Works will continue thereafter on the westbound carriageway located on the southern side of the project to bring the driving lanes up to the height of the newly constructed eastbound lanes between the East/West Highway Off Ramp and Tom Cringle Drive.

The $8 billion Mandela Highway reconstruction project includes the raising and widening of the roadway to a six-lane dual carriageway, constructing bridge, as well as improving drainage works.

This is expected to be completed by year end.
