First-time candidate 53-year-old Rosemarie Lindo, who is contesting the February 26 local government elections on a Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) ticket, albeit with a broken leg, is seeking to topple the People’s National Party four-time candidate and former mayor, Wayne McKenzie.

Lindo told The Gleaner that she developed a passion to serve the people after establishing a relationship with East Portland Member of Parliament Ann-marie Vaz, who encouraged her to fill the vacant spot left by former candidate Richard Burke. She is confident that she will be victorious when the ballots are counted.

“My home is in the Prospect division, and I enjoy a good relationship with the people all around. It is like family around here, and the communities have rallied around me,” Lindo says.

“I broke my leg almost a week and half ago, but I am still out there, albeit sitting in the vehicle and meeting and greeting the people. I have a competent team that have increased the tempo, and they are making good headway even though I am unable to be there physically walking the trails. I am really excited and upbeat, and the support from the various districts and communities is very encouraging.

“The Prospect division deserves more from its candidate, and I aim to make a difference in providing opportunities to the youth in terms of education, sports, and job opportunities so as to provide them with a better way of life. Upon realising that the need is great, I had no other choice but to put myself up as a candidate so as to see to the needs of the Prospect division, where I will seek to improve the basic infrastructure, including road, light, and water, following my victory,” she concluded.

Most recently, Lindo was on stage in a wheelchair during a mass meeting in Port Antonio, where JLP leader and Prime Minister Andrew Holness was the guest speaker.
