Power supply to approximately 500 customers in Port Royal, East Kingston is currently being impacted as a result of damage to Jamaica Public Service (JPS) underground cables in the vicinity of the lighthouse on Port Royal Road, the utility company said in a press release this evening.

“Initial reports are that the incident occurred this morning when a company contracted by the Airports Authority of Jamaica was carrying out construction on a marine defense barrier. It is reported that a manhole housing underground distribution cables serving Port Royal was damaged when a huge boulder fell from a tractor operated by the contractor causing damage to the JPS underground power lines,” JPS said.

JPS has indicated that in order to carry out repairs and restore normalcy, it will be necessary to temporarily suspend electricity to the community.

Work to repair the damaged infrastructure is being undertaken between 3:30pm and 10:30pm.

“JPS regrets the inconvenience and thanks the residents of Port Royal for their patience and understanding,” said the light and power company.
