Businessman Don Wehby has resigned from the Senate, leaving the governing Jamaica Labour Party with two seats to fill in the nation's Upper House of Parliament.

Wehby, a former minister without portfolio in the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service, just over a month ago also announced he would be taking temporary leave from his role as group chief executive officer of GraceKennedy Limited to focus on his health.

His departure from the Senate follows that of Matthew Samuda, who in September resigned from the Upper House to pursue representation of the constituency of North East St Ann.

Samuda subsequently won the by-election for the seat and has joined the House of Representatives, resuming his role as minister without portfolio in the Ministry of Growth and Job Creation.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister, Dr Andrew Holness has lauded Wehby for his "sterling national service" through the Senate.

“Senator Wehby has been a steadfast advocate for the needs of the Jamaican people, bringing invaluable commercial and entrepreneurial insights into the legislative process. Throughout his tenure, he has championed policies that reflect his commitment to shared prosperity, economic stability, and sustainable national development,” Holness said.

His perspective and sobering presentations have greatly enriched discussions in the Senate, bridging the gap between the public and private sectors and contributing to legislation aimed at creating a more resilient, stable economy that works for the Jamaican people.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness continued: “Don's presence in the Senate has been instrumental in shaping policies that support both our economic goals and the interests of the Jamaican people. His contributions have brought a unique private sector perspective to national governance, ensuring the Administration's approach remains balanced and forward-looking. We are deeply saddened by his departure. On behalf of the people and the Government of Jamaica, I thank Senator Wehby for his contribution to the Senate and wish him a speedy recovery.”
