Merron Gordon may be a Glenmuir past student, but the Garvey Maceo High school coach says he is looking to spoil his alma mater's 60th anniversary celebrations this afternoon, when both teams go head-to-head in their Zone M ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup competition at the Juici Beef Complex in May Pen, Clarendon.

The match-up between three-time champions Glenmuir and 2007 winners Garvey Maceo is just one of 35 daCosta Cup matches all slated to kick off at 3:30 p.m.

"The Garvey-Glenmuir game is always a big one. It is one that the entire parish always look towards. We know it's not going to be an easy feat, especially playing away to them - plus, they will be celebrating their 60th anniversary - so we will just have to go out there and spoil the party," said Gordon.

"I think it is added pressure on them. In this situation, I think we are coming out as the underdogs based on all the added excitement. They also topped the group last year, and we are new to this group. I always prepare my team to take it a game at a time, and we are very much prepared for this one," Gordon added, before noting that his focus is on leading his team to victory.

"I am a Glenmuir past student as well, so I want to go out there and express myself and my team well."

TESTING READINESS

Meanwhile, Warren Simpson, coach of Glenmuir, said their task to have a perfect run in the first round remains the same, as it will test their readiness for the rest of the competition. He, however, shared that he is aware of the mental toughness it will take to get by a rejuvenated Garvey Maceo team.

"We have a mandate to win this zone as that the first step if we are to do well in the completion this year, and this would involve winning tomorrow's game, so we are really gunning for three points," said Simpson.

"Psychologically speaking, the Glenmuir versus Garvey Maceo match-up is always a tough one. The psychological battle sometimes is even tougher than the tactical and physical based on the tradition of what both teams have to offer," he added.

In yesterday's action, Knox got the better of Troy 2-0 to remain unbeaten in Zone G, while Denbigh slammed Winston Jones 7-0 in another Zone M contest. Denbigh have scored 11 goals in their last two games, following their recent 4-0 win over Cross Keys.
