Molynes maintain perfect start to RSPL

Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) debutants Molynes United continued their perfect start to the season after their 1-0 win over fellow promoted team Vere United at the Wembley Centre of Excellence in Hayes, Clarendon, yesterday. The win keeps the St Andrew club atop the league standings with the maximum nine points.

Tashaine Campbell netted the game’s only goal as the visitors recorded their third straight win from as many games this season. But while many are surprised by the newcomers’ bullet start to the campaign, Lijyasu Simms, who coached Maverley/Hughenden to the RSPL two seasons ago, says that it’s just their hard work paying off and that he is confident they can maintain this level of performance throughout the season.

“It’s a big surprise to who don’t know the Molynes programme, but it is not a surprise to us,” he said. “We have been putting in the work from Super League, and we had full (preseason) preparation with the background training, and it is paying dividends. We have three wins from three games, and we will continue to take each game as it comes.”

Simms believes that going into future games, their underdog tag will be thrown out the window and they will have to live with being a marked outfit. But he says that they are prepared to go the distance against any team as they did against Vere to take all three points yesterday.

“We knew it would be tough (against Vere), the two promoted teams (playing), and going to Clarendon was never going to be easy,” Simms said. “It was a dogfight, and we came out victorious, so we have to give all praises to God and lift our hats to the players. But we have been preparing for this. We take each game one at a time, and we always go back to the training ground and see where our positives are and try to make it more positive and see where our negatives are and try to turn them into positives, and that is our plan going forward.”

Waterhouse have the maximum nine points from their three games, like Molynes, but are top on goal difference after their 7-0 trouncing of Harbour View. Harbour View sit third with six points. They are followed by Mount Pleasant and Cavalier on four and UWI, Arnett, and Vere on three points. Defending champions Portmore United and former winners Tivoli Gardens are at the bottom, still without a point.
