Former Cornwall College shot putter dies in accident on US highway

DESCRIBING HIM as an athlete who had the respect of his coaches and teammates, University Of Wyoming (UW) director of athletics Tom Burman paid tribute to Jamaican shot-putter Nathan Reid, who passed away tragically.

Reid, who was preparing to go into his senior year at the campus, died on Monday in a car crash in the United States. Reid was reportedly driving the only car in the accident which road construction workers discovered early on Monday.

Burman said that the former Cornwall College athlete had a bright future ahead of him and that the loss was felt throughout the campus.

“Any time you lose someone in the UW family it hurts but it is extremely sad when the individual is a UW student, said Burman on the school’s website, gowyo.com

“Nathan had a bright future and he was so well respected by his teammates and coaches. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, teammates and friends.”

Details of the accident are limited, but, according to the school site, Reid was driving on a US highway with the exact time of the incident yet to be determined.

Reid had earned an honourable mention at the All-American honours for his performances in the 2021-22 season, placing 23rd at the discus at the NCAA championships.

The 22-year-old had competed in five meets this year, two in the shot put and three in the discus. His last event was on April 15 at the Beach Invitational in Long Beach, California.
