King of Fit Fest, Kurt Dunn, created quite a storm in the heat of the summer with the holiday staging of his main event. So what happens in between time? Well, Dunn is flexing his fitness muscle in a unique fashion, forming not one but two weekly initiatives geared towards unlocking one’s healthier self: a walking club and a boot camp.

Dunn, owner and chief executive officer of Body By Kurt, tells Lifestyle, “I strongly believe exercise is for everyone. And I realise that not everyone wants to engage in activities like running. Some persons prefer to walk as it helps them to relax their minds and gets them to stay healthy in the process. The boot camp was conceptualised for persons who want the outdoors workout experience with a little grit added to make it fun and interesting.”

For 15 years, the wellness expert has been walking the walk, garnering a strong team of elite ‘fit-philes’ that he is honoured to call family. It is the same positive energy and camaraderie for the boot camp, which has been in existence for five years.

“We meet every Saturday at 5 a.m. and begin walking at 5:30. We normally complete 5 km to 7 km each Saturday. Security is always provided so persons can feel safe. One security is dedicated to the fast-paced walkers and one for those who prefer to walk at their own pace. Walkers in the middle are also covered by one security detail. We normally encourage our team members to walk in at least groups of two,” he revealed.

The walking club, Dunn continued, usually meets at a different location each week. “We also share the destination at the time of arrival. And we are easily identifiable by our red and black uniforms. These measures pique the members’ interests and keep them guessing, while they also act as security measures.”

As for the boot camp, which commences at 7 a.m. and finishes at 8:15 a.m., the focus is centred around completing a full-body workout. “All the major muscle groups are engaged with exercises such as tyre flips, bottle rope, band aerobics, step aerobics, stick aerobics and even dance aerobics,” he added.

“Boot camp always [have] a variety of exercises and we do not only focus on using tyres as most people are accustomed to. We ensure to introduce a variety of exercises weekly to keep the members interested and excited,” he said, adding, “I appreciate that some persons may not have enough time to carry out other forms of weight exercises during the week, therefore, we normally focus on a full body workout during boot camp each Saturday.”

Aside from helping the client to lose, gain or maintain weight, depending on the goal at hand, these groups, Dunn revealed, act as a form of motivation for the members. “Once you become a member, you will feel the energy of being a part of a caring and fun-loving family who is looking out for each other.”

There is a WhatsApp group designed for guidance and encouragement, as well as meal plans, eating tips, workout suggestions and recommendations. This assists with daily and weekly motivation so that group members can actualise their health goals.

“Staying hydrated before, during and after a workout session is very important in maintaining a healthy lifestyle,” said Dunn. For that reason, he is proud to have Pure H2O 100% Spring Water on board as a sponsor. Home & Things is also a sponsor.

Speaking on the benefits of this initiative, Dunn shared that it was important to start this movement so that it would bring a healthy consistency to the lives of others. “Consistency is a vital factor in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Having a weekly session will help our members to remain committed to their journeys. We cater to all fitness levels; whether you are just starting out or you are advanced, we have something for everyone. Our variety of activities will keep you interested and our camaraderie will keep you motivated.”
