CORNWALL COLLEGE goalkeeper Carlyle Tinglin saved the day to help his side squeeze out a 5-4 penalty shoot-out victory over Happy Grove High School in the ISSA/WATA Ben Francis Knockout Cup’s opening-round clash at Drax Hall Sports Complex in St Ann yesterday.

With this result, Cornwall will advance to the quarterfinals to join Frome Technical, Clarendon College, Denbigh, Manchester High, and daCosta Cup semi-finalists Glenmuir.

In wet, muddy conditions, it wasn’t until the 58th minute that Happy Grove’s Oshane Chambers fired home from a cross to open the scoring. Shortly after, he watched as his strike was cancelled out in the 62nd minute through Cornwall College’s Carlondo Morris, who re-established Cornwall’s presence.

Theodore ‘Tappa’ Whitmore said the victory was well deserved.

“I think the boys went out there and gave 110 per cent today. We left it late but came out victorious in the shoot-out. It came down to Carlando Morris, who scored and brought us back in the game. I thought it was an overall team effort, and congrats to the boys,” Whitmore said.

The penalty shoot-out remained even until Happy Grove’s Jahvor Lawrence had his penalty saved by Tinglin.

Tinglin was glib about his heroics saying, “For me, it was a normal save, but it made us win the game today. I feel great that we are going on to the next round. I thought we could have closed it out from the first half, but we went to the penalty shoot-out and did what we had to.”

Meanwhile, Vincent Wallace, coach of Happy Grove, said it was a good game despite the loss.

“I think it was a game of two halves. It took us a while to aclimatise to the conditions. The underfooting was rather difficult. We got a goal early in the second half, but we blundered, and as such, we conceded one. Going into penalties it is who the favour falls on, and so we are down. We will look to the future now that the season has ended,” Wallace said.

Cornwall and Happy Grove exchanged goals in the penalty until Happy Grove’s Jahvor Lawrence, in a tense moment, struck one high, which Tingling jumped to save.
