Condemn Opposition for halting emergency crackdown

THE EDITOR, Sir:
It is with a deep sense of insecurity and disbelief that I communicate my disappointment with the Opposition. How could they, in good conscience, vote against extending the state of emergency in St James?
Lives have been spared. People are free to move about and businesses have received a lifeline since its implementation.
As a child, I lived through the horror of the 1976 state of emergency, which was politically motivated. I remember to this day the incarceration of individuals, including Olivia 'Babsy' Grange.
Fast-forward to today. This one has been put in place to stem the runaway murder rate in Jamaica. Dr Nigel Clarke gave a good analysis in comparing the numbers with the fatalities in the Palestinian wars.
Why was the plan voted against? Is it for saving more lives or for political expediency?
That was a foolish move. Prime Minister, the ball is in your court. A life saved is of premium importance.
