Weird business logic at Max Glass Shop

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I wanted to bring to your attention my experience at Max Glass Shop at 55 Manchester Avenue in May Pen, Clarendon, on Thursday, January 10, 2019.

I was doing home renovation, and having decided to put a sliding panel on the bath, the workman and I chose the material and the style. The workman headed off to purchase same.

About an hour later, he called to say Max Glass Shop would not sell him the glass. I was shocked and decided to go to the shop myself, as I did not believe the workman.

I called Max Glass and asked if they had the bamboo plain or bamboo gold glass in stock. The answer was yes, so I headed to May Pen, got to the store, enquired again for the glass, and gave the young lady the measurement.

She asked about the purpose of the glass, and I told her it was for a bath enclosure. She responded: "Mr Campbell will not sell you because it's not made for that purpose." I asked Mr Campbell why I, as a consumer, could not purchase a product he has in stock.

Mr Campbell explained the differences with the glass, making specific references to the laminated triplet glass which, he said, was designed for the bathroom. Using the bamboo glass for my project would cost $12,000, while using the triplet, which he recommended, would cost $28,000.

Mr Campbell and I argued back and forth for 45 minutes, and yet he still refused to sell me the glass. While I do understand the ramifications and the safety issues, I do believe that the consumer has a right to purchase what he or she needs.

Management has no right to question the reason for the purchase, as that would be an invasion of privacy. To deny a person the right to pay for goods on sale is absolutely a lack of customer service.

I went out of parish and got my purchase and completed my project. However, I hope someone from the Consumer Affairs Commission can answer my concerns.
