Letter of the Day | What about diaspora voting

Published:Saturday | July 11, 2020 | 12:09 AM

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I live in the United States, and for years, all I can hear about is the diaspora. The remittances have often been used as a key contributor to the gross domestic product. Now, COVID-19 is upon us, and everyone is calling upon the diaspora for help.

Jamaicans living overseas fear for their lives and are afraid to return home to invest and live. My question is, why should Jamaicans living overseas be quick to help Jamaica when we are not allowed to vote? Why haven’t successive governments tried to put in place a system that will allow Jamaicans living overseas to vote?

Could someone give us some clarity on this matter?
