THE EDITOR, Madam:

I am writing as an advocate for the inclusion of international athletes in ISSA/Grace Kennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships, or Champs. This practice, which has been a topic of contention, is one I firmly believe enriches our competitions and contributes positively to the athletic and cultural fabric of our nation.

The participation of athletes from different countries on Jamaican soil brings a wealth of benefits that extend beyond the track. It fosters an environment of diversity and inclusivity, allowing our local athletes to compete against, and learn from, their international counterparts. This exchange of techniques, experiences, and cultures is invaluable, as it broadens the horizons of all involved and elevates the standard of competition. Further, the presence of international athletes at Champs provides a global platform for Jamaica’s athletic programmes. It draws international attention to our events, attracting sponsors, and creating opportunities for cultural exchange that can only serve to enhance Jamaica’s reputation as a hub for sporting excellence.

The argument that importing athletes stifles local talent is one that I understand but respectfully disagree with. Instead, I see this as a challenge for our local athletes to rise to the occasion, to push their boundaries, and to strive for excellence in an increasingly competitive environment. It is a call to action for our schools and athletic programmes to invest more in the development of our home-grown talents, ensuring they are equipped to compete at the highest levels.

Athletes like Aryamanya ‘Ari’ Rodgers of Kingston College and Delano Williams of Munro College, who have come to Jamaica and made a name for themselves, are testaments to the mutual benefits of this practice. They have not only developed their skills, but have also contributed to the local sports scene, inspiring young athletes and bringing diversity to the forefront of our competitions.

The integration of international athletes in Champs is a progressive step towards fostering a diverse and competitive sporting environment. It is an opportunity for Jamaica to showcase its hospitality, rich culture, and commitment to sporting excellence on a global stage. Let us embrace this diversity and view it as moving towards growth and development in Jamaican athletics.
