JUTC buses have become breeding ground for germs

THE EDITOR, Madam:

The Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) serves as a vital lifeline. However, a pressing concern persists – the cleanliness, or lack thereof, inside JUTC buses.

It’s essential to acknowledge that while newer buses in the fleet tend to be cleaner, the same cannot be said for their older counterparts. In my recent experiences travelling in these buses, it has been disheartening to see the dismal state of their interiors. From dirty seats, which are turning black, to mould-infested roofs and malfunctioning AC systems, forcing the bus doors to be left open, the list of cleanliness issues is extensive.

The implications of neglecting to maintain cleanliness within these spaces extend beyond mere aesthetics; they directly impact the health and well-being of the passengers, especially the young and elderly.

Imagine the scenario: a bustling JUTC bus filled with energy and conversation. However, beneath the surface lie invisible threats – germs, bacteria, and potential pathogens. For younger passengers with developing immune systems, this environment poses an elevated risk of illness. Every touch of a contaminated surface becomes a potential source for infection.

Similarly, for the elderly, who often rely on public transportation as their primary means of mobility, a simple bus ride can become a battleground against illness and disease. With age, immune systems weaken, leaving them more susceptible to infections. The failure to uphold cleanliness standards within JUTC buses not only compromises their health, but also undermines their independence and quality of life.

It’s imperative that we do not ignore this pressing issue. It is our collective responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of all passengers, regardless of age or circumstance. The cleanliness of JUTC buses is not merely a matter of convenience; it is a fundamental aspect of public health and safety.

The relevant authorities should prioritise and invest in regular cleaning and sanitisation protocols for JUTC buses.
