Craig Butler ran the Ice Man out of town

THE EDITOR, Madam:

To say the performance of this Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) administration has been inept would be the understatement of the century. But let’s be clear, they did not run coach (Heimir) Hallgrimsson out of town. The coach realised that the thing on the wall was not graffiti! The writing was indeed on the wall. He would never get a free hand at selecting Jamaica’s best talent for his team.

How could he possibly feel optimistic about his job when the JFF and Craig Butler made a mockery of him in the selection/non-selection of Leon Bailey and Dujon ‘Whisper’ Richards for the Copa tourney. Then to confirm Hallgrimsson’s Mickey Mouse status, the JFF suspended Bailey who had already said (well Craig told him to say) he did not know when next he would be available for the national team. Which one came first again: the chicken or the egg? I’m not playing! You are suspended! What? Who had the handle here? Not sure if it was the JFF or Craig, but I’m sure Hallgrimsson was holding the blade.

(So) before that thing ripped every vein in his hand/head Hallgrimsson decided to let go. We are a long way from the days when we were all excited at the notion that “the Ice Man cometh”. The summer of 2024 got too hot for the Icelander and he began to melt. Fresh off an 0-3 exit from Copa America, unable to break the ice between Butler, Bailey and the JFF, and facing the prospect of playing the rest of World Cup qualifying without Craig’s two charges: Whisper Richards and Leon Bailey, Hallgrimsson decided to stop the meltdown and head back to the freezer. Behold the Ice Man goeth! And the mess that is Jamaican football heads down the toilet. President (Mike) Ricketts is as quiet as a cricket as Butler prevails with his trademark dirty habit.
