The value of freedom

THE EDITOR, Madam:

The reliance on accurate news is reiterated amid the threat of turmoil such as Hurricane Beryl. In moments like these, people generally turn to the print and electronic media for updates, developments and instructions. During hurricanes and other natural misfortunes, the uninvestigated value of freedom of information is put to the test.

Should one believe in something because it is flying around on the Web or on social media?

Freedom of information may be a wonderful human service, yet, one needs to be mindful that liberty doesn’t facilitate mischief for pleasure, at the expense of others.

For instance, what if in the face of a storm that is certain to hit, the television or radio station were to release the following erroneous newscast:

“The Meteorological Office of Jamaica has determined that the hurricane is no longer a threat to the county because it has suddenly changed its course and is moving safely away from the island. The nation can therefore resume its normal activities.”

Can you imagine the disaster such fake information would cause to the lives of innocent people?

Perhaps moral fluidity will rise to the defence of those who abuse the freedom to circulate damaging news and stories effortlessly. But at the end of the day, is it freedom that decides the value of its own expressions, or is it the moral safeguards that should govern such liberty?
