Police on Dexta Daps arrest: Appropriate force was used

The St James Police say appropriate force was used yesterday to arrest artiste Dexta Daps at the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay.

The dancehall artiste, whose given name is Louis Grandison, has been charged with assault occasioning bodily harm, obstructing the police, resisting arrest and using indecent language.

The arrest, which involved a physical struggle between the police and the artiste, was captured on video.

Persons at the scene and on social media have raised questions about the use of force by the police.

However, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Paul Stanton, told The Gleaner/Power 106 News Centre, that the force was appropriate given the circumstances.

The senior policeman says the police attempted to arrest Grandison, who had intervened when a policeman was ticketing a member of his entourage for illegal parking.

Meanwhile, in one of the video-recordings of the incident, the artiste could be heard questioning why he was being held.

However, DSP Stanton says police personnel involved had informed Grandison of why he was being arrested.

He says Grandison, who is on bail, is scheduled to appear in court on May 13.
