JDF coast guard among persons arrested, charged by the police

A member of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) Coast Guard was among three persons arrested and charged by the police in separate incidents in which illegal guns and ammunition were seized.

The police say the JDF personnel was accosted yesterday afternoon along Oliver Road in Rockfort, Kingston 3.

They say a team was on patrol in the area when they saw him walking along the roadway.

He was accosted and searched and a nine millimetre Browning pistol with a magazine containing thirteen rounds of ammunition seized, according to the police.

The JDF coastguard, whose identity is being withheld by the police, is of a White Hall, Kingston 8 address.

In the other incidents, the police report that about 5:00 a.m on Wednesday a Piertro Berretta .380 pistol and eight .380 rounds of ammunition were seized during the search of a premises by a police team in Ten Mile, Bull Bay, St Thomas.

Forty-two-year-old Ricardo Francis, a mechanic of Jacksvale, Gypsum Road in the parish, was arrested and charged in connection with the seizure.

He is scheduled to appear before the Kingston and St Andrew Gun Court on Thursday, October 25.

Meanwhile, the police say about 7:30 a.m a joint police-military team, working in the State of Public Emergency in Kingston, searched an unoccupied house and found a Glock pistol with a magazine containing five rounds of ammunition hidden in a clothes basket.

No arrest was made.

Later that morning, the Spanish Town Police seized a nine millimetre pistol with two rounds of ammunition following an alleged confrontation with a gunman on the Ackles Hill main road, Kitson Town, St Catherine.

He has been identified as 35-year-old Garth Thomas who was fatally shot during that incident.

The Inspectorate of Constabulary and the Independent Commission of Investigations are investigating.

Also in St Catherine, the police say they recovered a Berretta Nano pistol with nine rounds of ammunition in Big Lane, Central Village and arrested 27-year-old Ricardo Linton.

The police say Linton has been charged with illegal possession of firearm and ammunition.

A date is to be set for him to appear in court.
